It’s 03:45 a.m. as I write. I’m full of a cold, my sinuses are hurting, I’m mentally planning a wedding and a christening, there has been a death in the family, I know the baby will want feeding in about 40 minutes and I’m scared I won’t hear him and he’ll wake up the big little and my brain is just generally full. In approximately six hours time I’ll be stepping on to the scales at my usual Slimming World gathering and I’m pretty sure I won’t see a loss this week. You can’t be perfect all the time. And like a good friend pointed out to me this weekend…

Be kind to yourself…

You are on this journey for the long haul – the lifestyle changes – and bad habits take time to break. I was hoping to be awarded with my stone certificate this week but instead of beating myself up about it I’m going to start again by using my own advice. After all, there is a very good reason for my weight gain.

Kick start your weight loss with the following tips:

Weigh More

Are you measuring your healthy extras? Because even just a few grams too many in the cereal bowl can set you back a full days worth of syns per week without you realising. On the days that I’m not in the mood to be meticulous I use my milk bottle with a 250ml line already marked off for my milk or I use ready portioned items like Weatabix (with a muller light and fruit on top) or Babybels (x3 lights grated over my spag bol).

Drink More

Are you drinking you 8 glasses of water per day? My top tip here is to keep a jug of water or sugar free juice on the kitchen counter with a glass. Every time I go into the kitchen I make sure I have a drink. Those hunger pangs you’re getting could actually be thirst, even if you don’t like to drink water making the effort to could mean the difference in a few pounds.

Move More

Everyone goes on about body magic. I get mine without even knowing I’m doing it. On the school run or in the supermarket. Have you thought about vacuuming a little more? Not because your house is dirty, but for the exercise. Try to hoover and mop your house throughout every day for one week and see if it makes a difference. Weed the garden. Mow the lawn. Get off the bus one stop earlier. Anything – just move!

Plan More

It’s habit for me now to sit down at the beginning of the week and make a meal plan. I invested in a meal planner to stick on my fridge from Paperchase and I mark down breakfast dinner, tea and snacks for the week. This helps me to make a shopping list and STICK TO IT at the supermarket. If you fear you will be tempted to buy junk at the supermarket – do your shopping online! And even if you’ve planned Slimming World Curry in for Tuesday but don’t fancy it, swap it for Thursday’s Pulled Pork instead.

Track More

When I first started my weight loss journey for the second time and I started to track what I was eating I knew how I’d managed to gain so much weight (and no, it wasn’t just the baby). Eating and tracking afterwards was a massive learning curve for me. I was using my syns on everyday food items such as pasta sauce without realising and then I was eating my own body weight in Cadbury Freddos! Some days I was eating my healthy extra B two or three times without realising too. If you sink it, ink it!

Speed It Up

Every week our Slimming World Consultant rams into us…

“At least one third of your plate should be speed food”

If you are not losing any weight eat more speedy foods. I don’t naturally reach for speed foods myself so I trick myself into eating more speed. Grate carrots and courgette into everything. I go through thousands of mushrooms because I love them so I put them in EVERYTHING. Even pickled things are classed as speed so break out those pickles and gherkins.

Sneaky, Sneaky

A huge part of any weight loss journey is this: Be honest with yourself. Nobody knows about my stash of Worthers Originals in the hidey hole under the steering wheel in the car but me. I know if I’ve eaten them all in one week… And even when the wrappers from all of the multi-pack Twirl fingers are in the BIN, it doesn’t delete the calories. But don’t forget that you are given your 15 syns per day for a reason… a little bit of what you fancy will do you good. Now all’s I need to do is learn how to control myself.

GO, go, go!

We’ve all been there. You’ve had a bad week and you know you’ve gained weight. Go. To. Weigh. In. ANYWAY! It’ll keep you on track and the support from others will help you ten fold.

Keep At It

If you can put hand on heart and say that you 100% stuck to plan this week and you still didn’t lose the only advice that I can give you is to stick at it. Track everything you eat and let your consultant give you feedback and who know’s? Maybe you’ll have a bigger loss next week?
